An unusual late-summer storm turned a week-long counterculture fest into a sloppy mess with tens of thousands of partygoers stuck in foot-deep mud and with no working toilets in the northern Nevada desert. But some Burning Man revelers said Sunday that their spirits remained unbroken.Organizers closed the festival to vehicles after one death was reported. Officials provided no details of the fatality.The annual gathering in the Black Rock Desert about 110 miles (177 kilometers) north of Reno attracts nearly 80,000 artists, musicians and activists for a mix of wilderness camping and avant-garde performances. OAKLAND — A 28-year-old man has been charged with beating and stabbing an 81-year-old man in a seemingly random attack in Hayward, court records show.The suspect was wrestled into submission by several witnesses to the attack, until police arrived and detained him. After police arrived, the man allegedly said that the victim had chosen his fate, but a relative of the victim told police they had no idea who he was or why the attack occurred. Police believe the suspect may have been under the influence of a controlled substance.The 81-year-old man was assaulted as he walked with family members on Whitman Street and Fruitwood Way in Hayward, on the evening of Aug. 17. The 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed him with a pocket knife eight times, then struck him repeatedly with a metal pipe. (KRON) -- A Santa Rosa man was arrested Friday night for shining a laser at a Sonoma County Sheriff's Office helicopter, officials said. Around 9:20 p.m., the helicopter was on air patrol assisting police with a nearby sideshow.The pilot and tactical flight officer were blinded by a blue laser for several seconds coming from the area of West Avenue. As the helicopter attempted to locate the exact location of the blue laser, the crew was struck by a green laser coming from the area of Pebblecreek Drive, the sheriff's office said. (KTLA) – After years of battling health problems, former Smash Mouth front man Steve Harwell died, the band confirmed Monday. He was 56 years old.Harwell’s manager told TMZ that the singer had suffered from alcohol abuse for years and that he had reached the final stages of liver failure, which he had recently been receiving treatment for. After being place in hospice care at his Boise, Idaho, home, Harwell died surrounded by loved ones, band manager Robert Hayes told Rolling Stone.
